I grew up in Sarnia, on the shore of Lake Huron. The beauty of the lake and the surrounding fields and forests had a lasting impact on me. My twin sister, a professional artist, shares my love for colour and design. I moved to the prairies when I was first married, raising three children and teaching piano lessons in my home studio. The huge sky and vastness of the land created spaces in me that wanted to be filled. I began to write music, producing and directing seven sacred musicals, three Christmas plays, and one Christmas cantata. My husband, (not knowing what he was letting himself in for), gave me a beginner’s quilting class for my 45th birthday. All of a sudden, the world of colour and shape and balance was open to me. I began to quilt, but quickly started to change and alter patterns that other people had written. I thought that everyone did! In 2006, I produced my first patterns, the “Batik Bazaar” series and have been drawing and sketching ever since.
My inspiration comes from the things I see around me, from candy to leaves and trees. I have produced many one-of-a-kind quilts just because the need to create arises in me and must be fulfilled. Others have become patterns that I can share with fellow enthusiasts.
I have shown work in the Canadian Quilters Association National Juried Show in 2008, 2010 and 2011, winning an Honourable Mention one year. My art quilts have won awards in Alberta and Saskatchewan; most recently, my art quilt entitled “Music of the Forest” won Best of Show at the Moose Jaw Prairie Hearts Quilt Guild show and “Amazing Grace” won 2nd place Viewer’s Choice at the same show. Curently, I’m busy working on a collaborative project called “Double Vision” with my twin sister. Thirty works of art will be shown in various Ontario galleries, with an expectation that other galleries across Canada will also feature the work.
